Description

1. How to Plant

Use a pot with drainage holes and a gritty mix: roughly two parts cactus or succulent compost to one part pumice or coarse sand. Set the bulb with its neck just above the soil line — burying it deep is the fastest way to rot it. Top-dress with gravel so the neck stays dry when you water. Plant 3–5 bulbs per 15 cm pot if you want a full look in the first season.

2. Light, Water and the Leaf Curl

Full sun to very bright indirect light. On a dim windowsill the leaves grow long, soft and almost straight; under strong light they spiral tightly and stay short. If curls matter to you, give it the brightest spot you have, and turn the pot weekly so it does not lean. Water freely while leaves are growing (autumn to late spring), letting the top few centimetres dry between waterings. When the foliage starts to yellow in early summer, cut back to almost nothing — a light sip every two to three weeks is plenty. The bulb is resting, not dead. Start watering again in late summer, when new tips appear.

3. Flowering

Mature bulbs send up a slender 20–30 cm spike in late winter or spring, carrying nodding creamy-white to pale yellow flowers with a warm vanilla scent. They open in succession from the base upward and last two to three weeks. Flowering takes energy, so keep watering and give a dilute liquid feed every three weeks while the spike is up.

4. Temperature, Dormancy and Offsets

Frost tender — happy at 15–24 °C and fine with cool nights. Outdoors it suits USDA zones 8–10 in a sheltered, sunny spot; anywhere colder, grow it in a container and move it under cover before the first frost. Indoors, keep it away from hot radiators and cold draughts. Offsets form around the mother bulb and can be separated at repotting every two to three years. Use a balanced feed at half strength during growth, never while dormant. The bulb resents being disturbed in active growth, so repot just before new leaves appear.

5. What You Receive

This listing is for one flowering-size caudex bulb with natural offsets already forming, the largest grade we lift and the quickest to a full specimen. Firm, healthy bulbs graded by size, lifted and checked by hand, packed dry with ventilation so they travel safely. Bulb size determines how quickly you get a full pot: two bulbs for a small windowsill pot, four to six for a standard 15 cm pot, eight to ten for a dense display or a large planter.
