Description

1. How to Plant

Plant bare-root divisions in autumn, while the soil is still warm. Pick a spot in full sun — at least six hours of direct light — with fertile, well-drained soil; peonies sulk in wet ground and simply refuse to flower in shade. Dig a hole wide enough to spread the roots, build a small cone of soil in the middle, and set the crown so the pink “eyes” (next year’s buds) sit just 2–3 cm below the surface. Deeper than that and the plant grows leaves but no flowers. Backfill, firm gently and water in.

2. Watering and Feeding, First Year On

Newly planted peonies often spend their first year settling in and may produce only a few stems — this is normal. Keep the ground weed-free around the crown, water during dry spells, and resist the urge to feed heavily. A mulch of well-rotted compost in spring is enough to keep them happy. Once established, peonies are drought-tolerant, but they flower best with a deep soak every ten days in dry weather — water at the base, not over the foliage. Feed with a balanced granular fertiliser as shoots emerge in spring, and again lightly after flowering. Avoid high-nitrogen feeds, which push soft leaves at the expense of blooms.

3. Flowering

This is the soft blush selection: shell-pink doubles that open earlier than the deep reds and carry the strongest fragrance of the four. Double peonies carry 15–20 cm blooms, often with a light rose-like fragrance, opening over two to three weeks from late spring into early summer. Side buds can be pinched out in bud to make the central flower larger, or left for a longer display. Heavy heads benefit from a peony ring or discreet stake. Ants visiting the buds are harmless — they are collecting nectar, not damaging the plant.

4. After Flowering and Long-Term Care

Deadhead spent blooms to tidy the plant, but leave the foliage intact: it feeds the crown for next year and turns red and gold in autumn. Cut stems down to ground level in late autumn once the leaves have died back. Do not cut green foliage earlier — you will lose next year’s flowers. Leave clumps undisturbed; they resent being moved and may take two seasons to flower again. Divide only when the centre becomes woody and flowering declines — every eight to ten years — lifting in early autumn and replanting the outer divisions at the correct depth. Hardy to about −30 °C (USDA zones 3–8) and generally ignored by deer and rabbits.

5. What You Receive

Freshly lifted bare-root divisions with 3–5 strong eyes each, packed in moist peat-free material so they arrive plump and ready to plant. Order one division for a single accent, three for a proper clump, or five for a full flowering hedge along a path.
