Description

1. A Fuchsia That Reads as Violet in Shade

The colour sits between hot pink and violet: saturated fuchsia in direct sun, deeper and cooler in shade, which makes it unusually useful for brightening a north-facing bed. Petals are smooth and evenly coloured with no blotching, so a mass planting reads as one clean block of colour instead of a patchwork. Cups open about 6 cm wide on 35-45 cm stems.

2. Spacing for Mass Effect

For a solid block of colour, plant on a 10 cm grid, roughly 40 bulbs per square metre. For a looser drift among perennials, 15 cm apart in groups of nine or more reads far better than a scattered line. Depth is 15 cm to the base of the bulb, pointed end up, in full sun. Narrow beds do better with two rows than one, because the stems support each other.

3. Soil, Site and Winter Chill

Work the top 20 cm and remove stones; add compost only if the soil is very light, since rich soil encourages leaf at the expense of flower. Aim for pH 6.0-7.0 with free drainage. Tulips need a real cold spell, 12 to 14 weeks under 10 C, to complete flower formation, so in warm-winter areas pre-chill the bulbs in the refrigerator for eight weeks in a ventilated paper bag.

4. Water and Feed Without Overdoing It

One deep watering at planting, then nothing until shoots appear. Through spring, water only when the top 3 cm of soil is dry; waterlogging at this stage causes basal rot that shows up as blind, leafless shoots. Apply a potassium-forward bulb feed at 5 cm of growth and again when the buds colour. Stop watering as the petals fall so the bulb hardens rather than staying soft.

5. Deadheading and the Six Week Rule

Remove the seed pod within a day or two of petal fall, taking the top of the stem but leaving the foliage. The leaves must stay in full sun for six to eight weeks until they turn yellow and release from the bulb with a gentle pull. Cutting green foliage early robs the bulb of next year’s flower and is the most common cause of a thin second season.
