1. A Blend, Not a Random Scoop
The colours in this mix are chosen to open within about ten days of each other, so you get one continuous block of colour instead of a few early flowers and a long wait.
2. Plant in Drifts, Not Rows
Tip the bag out and plant where the bulbs land. Odd numbers, no straight lines, and blocks of at least fifteen are what make a mixed planting read as deliberate rather than scattered.
3. Three Times Deep, Full Sun
Set bulbs three times their own height deep and 10 to 12 cm apart in full sun. In containers use a loam-based compost, which holds moisture through winter better than a light multipurpose mix.
4. Cut When the Bud Colours
Take stems when the bud is coloured but still closed. Tulips keep opening in the vase and grow a centimetre or two after cutting, so arrange them shorter than looks right at first.
5. Let the Foliage Finish
Deadhead the petals but leave the leaves standing for about six weeks until they yellow. That is the bulb refilling itself, and it is the difference between one year and several.
