Description

1. A Scarlet That Keeps Its Depth

These are the scarlet tulips that hold their colour instead of washing out to orange in bright spring sun. The petals are thick, lightly waxed and firm at the margin, so the cup keeps a clean, slightly rounded silhouette from bud break to petal fall. Blooms open roughly 6 cm across on stems 40-50 cm tall, with a darker base that gives the flower visual weight and a lighter tip that catches the light.

2. Plant in Autumn, Pointed End Up

Plant once the soil has cooled below 13 C, usually late September through early November. Set each bulb 15 cm deep measured from the base, with the pointed tip facing the sky, then firm the soil gently to close any air pocket around the bulb. Space them 12-15 cm apart for bedding, or 10 cm for a dense carpet. Full sun, six hours or more of direct light, gives the shortest and stiffest stems.

3. Drainage First, Fertility Second

Tulips rot in wet soil long before they starve in poor soil. A sandy loam at pH 6.0-7.0 is ideal; on clay, plant on a 5 cm layer of horticultural grit or raise the bed by 10 cm. These bulbs also need 12 to 14 weeks below 10 C to break dormancy and finish forming the flower inside the bulb. In mild winter regions, pre-cool them in a ventilated paper bag in the refrigerator for eight weeks before planting.

4. Watering and Feeding Through Spring

Water once at planting and then leave the bulbs alone until green shoots show. From emergence to petal colour, keep the ground evenly moist, around 2 cm of water a week in dry spells, and never let water stand. Feed a low-nitrogen, high-potassium bulb fertiliser when shoots reach 5 cm. Nitrogen at that stage makes soft leaves and floppy stems, which is the usual reason tulips collapse in wind.

5. After the Flower: Let the Leaves Work

Snap off the seed pod as soon as the petals drop, but keep the stem and every leaf. Those leaves are rebuilding the bulb for the following spring and need six to eight weeks of full sun before they yellow and pull away without resistance. Only then cut them at ground level. Skipping this step is the single biggest reason tulips flower once and then disappear.
