Description

1. A Saturated Orange-Red, Doubled and Ruffled

This is the hottest colour in the collection: a true vermilion that reads orange in daylight and red under warm indoor light. Every petal carries a pale streak up the centre, which keeps the mass of colour from going flat, and the edges are heavily ruffled. The bloom is fully double with tightly packed inner petals, 15–18 cm across, and each scape holds four to six of them opening in succession over about three weeks.

2. Potting for a Heavy Head

Plant with the top third of the bulb above the surface in a pot that clears the bulb by three to five centimetres on each side. Use a gritty, free-draining mix and add a slow-release potassium source at the base of the pot, not against the roots. Because the flower head is dense and therefore weighty, choose a pot with a little ballast — terracotta or a stoneware cachepot — so it does not tip when the flowers open.

3. Sun, Water and the Reason Stems Stretch

Give it the brightest position available from the moment the nose of the scape appears. Etiolation — pale, drawn-up stems that flop — is almost always a light problem rather than a water one. Water thoroughly when the surface dries, and keep water out of the hollow at the top of the bulb. Feed every two weeks while the leaves and flowers are growing, then continue with a high-potassium feed after flowering to firm the bulb for the following year.

4. Foliage, Dormancy and the Second Year

After the flowers finish, remove the spent head and leave both the stem and the leaves. Broad glossy leaves follow quickly and stay ornamental well into summer, arching to about half a metre. They are the only engine the bulb has, so cutting them back early costs you next season’s flowers. Let the plant dry off naturally in late summer, hold the pot dry for two to three months, then restart watering to trigger a fresh scape.

5. Firm Bulbs, Checked One by One

Every bulb is handled individually: checked for a firm neck, an unbroken basal plate, no mould between the scales and no sign of the red blotch that ruins stored bulbs. Roots are trimmed but kept alive, and the bulbs are packed in ventilated wrap rather than sealed film. A healthy bulb of this grade carries two or three flower buds already formed inside.
