Description

1. Striped Double Blooms That Open in Layers

Each scape carries four to six fully double flowers, roughly 15–18 cm across. The petals are white at the base and brushed with rose pink that deepens toward the tip, so no two blooms in a head are marked alike. The throat stays green, which is what gives the flower its fresh, unheated look. Because the form is double, the centre is filled with upright petaloids rather than stamens, and the bloom holds its shape for close to three weeks on the plant.

2. Planting: Shallow, Warm and Well Drained

Set the bulb in a pot only 3–5 cm wider than the bulb itself, with the top third of the bulb left above the compost line. A tight pot is deliberate: amaryllis roots prefer to be crowded, and an oversized pot holds water around the basal plate. Use a free-draining mix with a handful of grit, water once after planting, then leave it until the nose of the scape shows. Flowering size bulbs produce a scape in six to eight weeks from planting.

3. Light, Water and Feed Through the Season

Once growth starts, move the pot to the brightest window you have — direct winter sun is welcome, and strong light is what keeps the stem short and the flower head upright. Water when the top two centimetres of compost feel dry, never on a fixed schedule. Begin a balanced liquid feed at half strength when the buds colour up, and continue while the leaves are growing. Stake only if the head leans; a well-lit stem rarely needs it.

4. What the Plant Looks Like After Flowering

When the last flower fades, cut the spent head off at the top of the stem but leave the stem itself, and never cut the leaves. Strap-shaped leaves 45–60 cm long follow the flowers and stay glossy green for months, arching outward from the neck of the bulb. That foliage is the plant working, not decoration: it rebuilds the bulb for next year. Keep watering and feeding until the leaves yellow on their own, then stop and let the pot dry out for eight to ten weeks before starting again.

5. Graded, Firm Bulbs with Roots Attached

Bulbs are lifted, cleaned and graded by circumference, then checked for firmness, an intact basal plate and no soft patches at the neck. They travel with live roots still attached, wrapped in breathable material rather than sealed plastic, so they arrive dormant but not desiccated. Plant within a few days of arrival, or hold them in a cool, dark, frost-free place for up to a month.
